Health officials in Camden County said an employee of a Starbucks in Gloucester Township tested positive for hepatitis A and worked at the store during the virus infection.

The Camden County Health Department said they were notified of the situation on Wednesday and ordered the closure of the store at 1490 Blackwood-Clementon Road until all employees were vaccinated.

Based on the possibility of exposure and out of cautious considerations, “The Ministry of Health recommends that any member of the public visiting Starbucks facilities in the sun on November 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 be vaccinated against hepatitis A.”

The county will open a hepatitis A vaccine clinic at a sustainable facility in Camden County at 508 Lakeland Road from 3 to 7 pm on Friday. It will also be open from 9 am to 11:30 am on Saturday. Vaccine appointments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

In a statement, Camden County Health Officer Paschal Nwako said: "The county health department has been working closely with patients and Starbucks staff to deal with this situation. Our first priority is to ensure that all relevant personnel remain safe and healthy. The patient is currently unemployed and close contacts have been identified. We encourage anyone who may think they have been exposed to hepatitis A to call the county health department or your primary care doctor to get the hepatitis A vaccine."

Officials say that hepatitis A is usually spread when a person ingests feces, even in small amounts. Signs and symptoms may include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, clay-colored stools, joint pain, and/or jaundice. Symptoms appear 2 to 4 weeks after exposure, although they may appear 2 to 7 weeks after exposure.
