Officials said that during the night crackdown on Friday, the deputy sheriff seized 43 vehicles with forged paper license plates on Brooklyn streets.

The operation started at midnight and lasted until 6 a.m.-across the 69th, 63rd, and 67th districts, which included communities such as Kanasi, Flatbush, and Mill Basin.

According to New York City Sheriff Joseph Fucito, they use license plate reader technology to identify some offending vehicles.

Fucito said the sheriff will investigate who actually owns the cars.

"Once we discover the real owner, the real owner will be noticed," he told the Washington Post during the operation. "Then the real car owner must come in and prove that their vehicle is properly registered."

“If not, they must register the vehicle, otherwise the only way for them to remove the vehicle is to tow it out,” he said. "They can't drive on public streets."

Fucito said the car owner will be responsible for any pending verdicts for unpaid speeding, camera and parking violation summons and any criminal sanctions for their actions.

"Think of it as a cover, it really hides the true ownership of the vehicle," Fucito said. "So what we want to do is find out who the real owner of the vehicle is, and then hold them responsible for any violations they may have under the vehicle."

Fucito stated that illegal or forged license plates allow vehicles to bypass speed cameras, red light cameras, bus lane cameras and other public safety projects in the school district.

Illegal license plates are also used to evade tolls at border crossings in urban bridges and tunnels.

Officials said the sheriff conducted the operation with technical support and cooperation from the New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparation.
